Breakdown Cover Questions & Answers

After doing a bit of research, most people don't realise that car breakdown cover isn't as straight forward as they had originally thought. Cover can be divided into two main groups based on the way in which the cover works, these are;

How quickly will I be rescued if I breakdown?
Will my vehicle be fixed/repaired at the roadside?
What happens if I breakdown at home?
How many call outs do I get?
Am I covered if Iím in someone elseís car?
What if I breakdown without any cover?

How quickly will I be rescued if I breakdown?
This can depend on many factors. Generally in the winter you can expect it to take longer to receive a response from your breakdown provider, as this is the most likely time of year for a breakdown and their busiest period. Another key factor is where you breakdown; if youíre in an urban area you are likely to get a quicker response. Have a look at our breakdown cover provider pages for an indication as to the average response time for each provider.

Will my vehicle be fixed/repaired at the roadside?

All breakdown recovery providers will initially attempt to repair your vehicle at the roadside. If this is not possible they would normally tow you to a local garage or to another destination depending on the level of cover you have.

What happens if I breakdown at home?

Most breakdowns occur at, or close to your own home. Because of this, most breakdown cover providers will charge you extra for protection against this type of breakdown; if you have at home cover then they will respond as normal. If you do not have this level of cover, the breakdown provider would normally still respond, but would then charge you (quite a lot) for the privilege.

How many call outs do I get?

Most of the larger providers offer unlimited call outs, however we strongly suggest that you check the terms and conditions as this can be limited, normally to around 3 per year.

Am I covered if Iím in someone elseís car?

If you have cover for a specific car, then your car will be covered no matter who is driving. If you are covered, then you are generally covered no matter which vehicle you are in, even if you are the passenger.

What if I breakdown without any cover?

Then you wont get any sympathy from us. Call a breakdown provider and they will come and try to help, although they will charge you (significantly) for the privilege, often several hundreds or thousands depending on what is required. Donít say we didnít warn you.
